Supply chain analysis of wireless charging transmitter for wafer shortage

Release date:2018-02-01   Views:2036

In September 2017, apple officially added wireless charging to its three new models. So far, wireless charging technology has been concerned by all parties and developed rapidly. The domestic mobile phone Jinli M7 plus has also added the wireless charging function. This is just the beginning. It is reported that domestic mobile phones such as Xiaomi, Huawei, hammer, Nubia, glory and vivo have plans to add this function to the next generation of mobile phones.

Since Apple's iPhone 8 / 8 plus / X supports wireless charging, the wireless charging market has been booming. The entire wireless charging market has increased by about 5-6 times compared with that before the release of Apple's new machine, and will continue to grow several times in 2018.

Supply chain analysis: at present, the main transmitter chip suppliers are NXP, IDT, Ti, Toshiba, St, etc., among which NXP At present, domestic suppliers mainly focus on solutions and modules, mainly including Jinxin micro, Yichong, Fuda and Taiwan Lingyang. Some of its controllers are mainly purchased from St, Ti, NXP, Fujitsu and some chips are independently developed.

In principle, the current mobile phones will adopt Qi standard, which means that there is a great similarity in the hardware architecture of the transmitter. At the transmitter, MCU controls the power, communication and FOD detection algorithm; the power part is composed of op amp, full bridge MOSFET and gate driver. The core devices include MCU, MOSFET, gate driver, Op Amp, NPC (COG) capacitor and coil.

After entering the third quarter of 2017, the prices of passive components, represented by MLCC, have soared due to the tight supply and demand of production capacity, and some materials have even increased by more than 10 times. However, MOSFET cores similar to the passive component market are also in short supply, which leads to price rise. Even if new orders are added on the basis of a 20% premium, it is still difficult for suppliers to deliver and ship. More seriously, the shortage of MOSFET chip market will be difficult to alleviate in the short term, mainly because of the huge demand brought by new energy vehicles, mining machines, etc., including wireless charging. It is conservatively estimated that the situation will not change until 2019.

Therefore, the supply of wireless charging solutions equipped with MOSFET in 2018 will be a severe test. In addition, suppliers without wafer factories will be seriously affected. Chip suppliers with high integration and self owned wafer factories will benefit from this round of shortage.
