USB PPS standard is roughly confirmed, terminal application will appear next year

Release date:2017-06-22   Views:2019

Although USB PD 3.0 has not officially provided programmable power supply, However, as the industry has reached a consensus on which underlying technologies should be included in PPS, only a few details have yet to be confirmed. Therefore, fresco logic chose to officially release its first solution that can support PPS function and comply with USB PD 3.0 Rev. 1.1 specification during Computex in order to seize the market opportunity. At present, the chip has entered the testing stage. It is estimated conservatively that the terminal application products supporting PPS will be launched as soon as the second half of next year.

In the next version of USB PD standard, PPS is the most noticeable and important update, said Bob McVay, chief technology officer of Ruisi. Through PPS, the output voltage of USB can not only be fine tuned in the range of 3-21v with 20mV step amplitude, but also support 5A constant current charging. At the same time, Qualcomm's latest quickcharge 4.0 technology is compatible with the PPS protocol, which allows smartphones to charge up to 50% of their battery capacity in 15 minutes. In contrast, the current PD standard does not have such high flexibility and can only support five preset configurations (Profiles), with output power of 10W, 18W, 36W, 60W and 100W respectively.

In addition to the more flexible power supply mode, PPS can also simplify the hardware design of the device at the receiving end. Because the output voltage of PPS can be as low as 3V, the power supply end can directly charge the battery at the receiving end, so that the receiving end can save the next power conversion. This not only improves the charging efficiency, but also significantly reduces the heating degree of the receiving device during charging.

In order to speed up the introduction of PPS by customers, Ruisi launched the first PPS solution supporting the fast charging protocol standard of power delivery (PD) 3.0 Rev1.1 at Computex. This design integrates the fl7103 PD control chip based on Panther Creek architecture of the company, as well as the boost voltage conversion technology provided by a third party. At present, the solution has entered the final test stage, and is expected to provide a series of charging design solutions in line with the PPS standard for the market, and help customers quickly import PPS into applications such as tablet computers, mobile power supply, mobile devices, smart home and automotive electronics.

It is worth mentioning that in addition to the basic fast charging features, the chips based on Panther Creek architecture also have reconfigurability and strong survivability, and can also be customized by customers according to their needs. The built-in microcontroller (MCU) improves the flexibility of products, enables customers to timely correct on-site system problems while technical standards and specifications are constantly upgraded, and can also repair compatibility problems with important host platforms. The fl710x product line with this architecture has obtained usb-if certification, and is widely used in host, adapter / hub and charger.
