Sandisk, maker of flash memory CARDS, announced the acquisition of Ffusion IO, a well-known all-flash array maker, for a total of $1.1 billion. The news is pretty explosive in the storage space.

Fusion-io may not be well known to the average consumer, but it has a huge impact in the all-flash space. Headquartered in Salt Lake City, THE company makes flash memory products and software for data centers and has clients like Facebook and Apple.

The acquisition of Fusion-IO is a sign of how Sandisk, which makes flash memory CARDS for mobile devices like smartphones and tablets, is making its way into the enterprise market.

Sandisk CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said, "Ffusion IO will strengthen our data center flash product business to help enterprise users better manage their data load at lower cost.

The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of this year, but will not contribute to Sandisk's results until at least the second half of 2015.
